History of the Cha Cha
The Cha Cha evolved from one of three versions of the Mambo, a dance born in Cuba and introduced to the west in 1947. The “Triple Mambo,” one of the versions became very popular in the early 1950’s and was subsequently renamed the Cha Cha. As mambo music slowed, a musical triplet was added. As a result, dancers started dancing a triple, or a chasse`, into the dance.
About the Dance
Not to be confused with the Latin Cha Cha, the American Cha Cha has developed its own syllabus and figures separate from its Latin counterpart. The technique used in Cha Cha is known as “Cuban” and features an upward hip action, often called a “hip lift.” The tempo of American Cha Cha is generally slower than its international counterpart. Another musical difference between the American and Latin Cha Cha is that American Cha Cha music has more polyrhythm.
