History of the East Coast Swing
A true “American” dance, and a descendant of the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug. This dance is also known as the Triple Time Swing and is the predominant representative of the “Swing Dance Family,’ in the American Style.
It dates back to the 1920’s when the Charleston and Lindy Hop were combined with Jazz music. This dance continues to be popular with all age groups as there is music from all eras. Amongst social dancers today, it continues to be one of the most predominant social dances.
About the Dance
The East Coast Swing is characterized by a heavy, rhythmical shuffle, unlike Jive and many other dances in the Swing family. Since it is danced to slower music, it is possible to socially dance non-east coast swing figures as its own move in this dance. Many of these figures include time changes, which is why it remains so popular for dancers of all levels.
