History of the Rumba
The Rumba mostly evolved in Cuba in the 16th century with great influence from the African slaves. Although this Spanish-American mix is considered to be Cuban, the version of this dance was to be seen on the Caribbean Islands and in Latin America.
About the Dance
As Rumba music became popular internationally, instructors in the United States realized it was easier to teach international rumba through the box step. It eventually developed its own syllabus and step list that features this “Cuban Box.” Now, it is not to be confused with the Latin Rumba in International Style, as the two dances have become so dissimilar. Today, it would be difficult to interchange them at a social dance function without extensive training.
The “Box Step,” became so popular that we now see it in most American Style dances. It is a favorite amongst social dancers, wedding dancers, and those who favor slow music.
