History of the Bachata
The Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic at the beginning of the 20th century. It is widely accepted that Jose` Manuel Caldero`n recorded the first bachata song “Borracho de amor.” Traditional music is a combination of Spanish ‘son,’ also recognized as trabador singing, and Caribbean beats. Many elite in the Dominican Republic disliked the bachata as crude and vulgar. It hasn’t been until the 1990s, when the instrumentation changed to modern guitars and drums, has the bachata gained international popularity.
About the Dance
The bachata combines the softness of the bolero, with the side steps of the merengue. Unlike the merengue, it is common to see body ripples and time changes. It remains one of the core group of dances on cruises and in “salsa” clubs. Because of the flexibility in the music, it is a favorite amongst beginners and advanced dancers.
